Education & Community

I have a varied experience base across education and community projects including arts for health, you can see examples of some of these project within the case studies section of this website here

I have a lot of experience working on ‘enquiry’ based projects helping clients to investigate particular problems through creativity and partnership working, many of these projects were with Creative Partnerships. I have a particular interest in working towards bridging the gap between education and industry and enjoy working on projects which are predominantly participant led; encouraging students to think independently. This approach promotes and develops the transferable skills which are so important  for the development of our children and young people.

I work with an enhanced CRB check and my own Public Liability insurance.

I am based in both the South West (Bath) and the West Midlands and am also happy to travel to other regions.

Example workshops include:

Bookmaking

Studying the art of book binding whilst living in Japan, ignited a passion which I have continued to develop here in the UK.

There are endless possibilities which can be created through books, even with just a few techniques. They provide an excellent framework for consolidating research, generating ideas and encouraging communication, reflection and evaluation, whilst building confidence and a sense of achievement.

A variety of workshops are available for all levels and abilities.

Sketch books and portfolio presentation techniques are popular workshops, suitable for all, including primary and secondary schools and adults.

I have a wide range of handmade books available as examples to help inspire, from book art pieces to tradtionally bound books.

Textiles

I am available to give talks on my practice and work with students on textiles and creative career options. I have a wide variety of samples which can be used to illustrate different ways of working including; 3-d fine art sculpted textiles, graphic and geometric prints, machine embroidery and 2-d relief pieces. All of which give a first hand understanding of the breath of techniques and options availble within textiles and related careers.

Practical workshops include:

  • Designing and digitally printing your own repeat pattern onto fabric and paper; this can include basic Photoshop tuition.
  • Screen printing (I have portable screen printing equipment)
  • Experimental 2-d and 3-d textiles

Japanese Culture

Making use of a large collection of textiles and unusual objects, students get to learn about and explore this unique culture. A variety of sessions can be arranged based upon a variety of Japanese festivals and customs, as well as using this collection as stimulus and inspiration for book art and presentation techniques.

I also offer workshops around symbolism in Japanese design and have recently joined forces with Bini Ludlow to offer a 4 day workshop looking at Symbolism in Asian Textiles. Exploring Japanese and Indian textiles and cultures participants learn about and explore the meanings in the designs, they will look at and practise a variety of techniques including screen printing, embroidery and applique. Using sketchbooks participants are taken through the design process and will produce a textile panel with symbolic representation of themselves and or their interests using Asian textiles as inspiration. This panel will then be put onto a bag for life. If you are interested in this 4 day workshop for children (year 4 upwards) and adults please get in touch here.

I also offer short one off sessions as well.
